What To Bring

What To Bring

The anticipation has been building and now you are ready to set off for your first visit to the IndyCar Series?   It’s an experience like no other and to make it even better we’ve put together a list of suggestions for what to bring and how to dress.

Arriving at the racetrack for the first time can be an overwhelming experience.  Sights, sounds, smells - it seems like every second, or hundredth of a second something new is going on.  Making sure you have all that you need with you, will allow you to focus all of your senses on the activity around.

There are several things you can do to make your experience all the more enjoyable.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes – There’s a lot of walking to do on race weekend and the last thing you want to be faced with is sore feet and legs. Arch support is vitally important at the end of the day so we recommend that you leave your flashy sandals, high heels, flat shoes without arch support and the likes at home and stick to running shoes or a good walking shoe.  Your feet, legs and back will thank you for it. Also if you have pit access or a pit walk-through, closed toe shoes are mandatory.
  • Bring a Sun Hat and Sun Glasses – Sunburn, and worse, heat exhaustion can limit your Rexall Edmonton Indy to a one day experience.  Protect your head and eyes by bringing a large brim, light coloured sun hat. Finish off the look with your coolest shades.
  • Dress for the Weather – While we all hope for clear skies and sun, the Rexall Edmonton Indy will go on rain or shine.  Layers are always a good option; it can be a bit chilly very early in the morning and then change into a high humidity day with blazing sun by noon.  Layer your clothing so you can add or remove as required.  And if the weatherman indicates rain, keep a raincoat or poncho with you.  Remember pit access and especially HOT pit (when cars are on the racetrack) requires full-length pants and shirts with sleeves.
  • Apply Sunscreen – Put it on in the morning but remember to bring a bottle or tube along with you for repeat applications.  You best defense against the sun is sunscreen. 15 SPF or higher is recommended.
  • Carry a Backpack – There’s nothing worse than having to juggle food, souvenirs, and if you’re a woman - a purse, all day long, especially when you’re rushing somewhere.  A backpack large enough to fit your peeled off layers and your belongings is the easiest way to transport your personal items.
  • Drink Your Water – Dehydration is a real danger on a sunny race weekend.  While water and other beverages will be on sale throughout the facility, it’s always a good idea to start the day off with your own cold bottle.  Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages can dehydrate you, so make sure you keep alternating these beverages with water and sports drinks.  Recent research shows that water alone may not be enough to keep us hydrated under extreme conditions.  Adding in an occasional sports drink is a good idea.  Glass bottles and containers are not permitted on site.
  • Have a Camera Handy – Snap away pics of friends, family and perhaps a chance encounter with one of IndyCar stars!  Pictures for personal enjoyment are a great souvenir.  However photographing the event for commercial purposes is a no-no.  News and sports media are granted special permissions to capture and rebroadcast IndyCar, Atlantic and NASCAR Canadian Tire images.
  • Get the Big Picture with Binoculars- Great for getting a close up look at just about everything and everyone!
  • 98.5 FM Grand Prix Radio - You don’t have to rely on the PA speakers to keep you up to speed with what’s happening on track!  You can bring your FM radio to the event and tune in to 98.5FM to hear all the race broadcasts and closed circuit PA announcements.
  • Carry Your Autograph Book or Pen and Paper - If you’ve got paddock access you’re definitely going to have a chance at a close encounter with the stars and personalities in IndyCar.  If you like to collect autographs, don’t forget your tools.  Professional autograph vendors are discouraged.
  • Bring Cash – The ‘stuff’ at the Rexall Edmonton Indy is to drool over. Team merchandise and more is available on Adrenaline Alley.  Cash or credit cards are accepted most everywhere. There will also be 12 Cash N Go ATM’s, conveniently located within the grounds.
  • Remember Your Cell Phone – while pay phones are located on-site, it is a good idea to have a cell with you for important calls.  Paging you is virtually impossible in an emergency situation. <
  • Protect Your Ears with Earplugs – The noise is one of the best things about a car race.  But it can get really loud.  If you have earplugs bring them along.  If not, some will be on sale throughout the facility.
  • Babies, Toddlers and Pets – Of course bringing babies and toddlers to the track is up to each parent, but be aware when considering it that the environment at a IndyCar race is very stimulating.  While some younger children enjoy the experience, it can be a bit overwhelming for the very, very young.  Racing is a dangerous sport and, for their safety, pets will not be admitted to the grounds.
